Backlinks remain the single most powerful off-page ranking signal in Google's algorithm. But the tactics that worked in 2018 — mass outreach, guest post networks, resource page submissions — have become progressively less effective as Google's spam detection has matured. What earns links in 2026 is fundamentally different.
Create Something Worth Linking To
The most durable link-building strategy has always been the same: produce content that serves as a resource. Original research, proprietary data, comprehensive tools, and definitive guides naturally attract links because other writers and journalists need to cite their sources. A well-designed study that surfaces a non-obvious insight can earn hundreds of editorial links with zero outreach.
If original research is out of scope, consider the 'Skyscraper' approach: identify well-linked articles in your niche and create a materially better, more current version of the same topic.

Digital PR and Brand Mentions
Digital PR — pitching stories, data, and expert commentary to journalists and publishers — has become one of the most scalable link acquisition channels. A good pitch connects your expertise to a current news angle, gives the journalist something genuinely useful, and asks for nothing except a citation.
Monitor brand mentions with a tool like Ahrefs Alerts or Google Alerts. Unlinked brand mentions are low-hanging fruit: the author already knows and trusts you — a short, friendly email asking them to add the link converts at a surprisingly high rate.
Broken Link Building
Thousands of valuable pages on the web link out to resources that no longer exist. Find pages in your niche linking to 404s, create a replacement resource on your own domain, and email the webmaster with a helpful heads-up. The pitch writes itself: 'Hey, one of your outbound links is broken — here's a working alternative.' It's genuinely useful, not a cold ask.
What to Avoid
Link exchanges, private blog networks (PBNs), and mass guest posting on low-quality sites can earn manual penalties and algorithmic suppression. Google's spam team is sophisticated and growing. The safest link profile is one where every link was earned because someone found your content genuinely valuable — anything engineered to look like that without actually being that is a liability, not an asset.
